CHAPTER NINETEEN

“Hi Ace.” Gabi greeted Ace quietly, standing in the doorway of his office waiting for his invitation to come in. “Ghost and Zulu said that you wanted to see me about some of the information that you’ve uncovered.”

“Hi Gabi.” Ace greeted Gabi in the same quiet tone, grateful that the woman already was understanding his style. The way in which he spoke wasn’t shyness, it was more uncertainty and fear. “Why don’t you sit right there and I’ll tell you what I’ve found.” She smiled as he pointed to a chair on the opposite side of the table, nodding to the younger man.

“Ace…if this is uncomfortable for you, I can review the information and get back to you,” she said trying to keep her voice at a low, even register. He looked up, surprised at first and then let a small grin escape, knowing that his teammates probably told her what his quirks entailed.

“How much do you know?” he asked shaking his head.

“Nothing really other than you don’t like loud noises or to be touched. I won’t touch you I promise. But…because I’m an insatiably curious doctor, do you have autism?” she asked. Ace completely took her by surprise when he let out a loud, rumbling laugh, his pristine white teeth gleaming from between his full lips and that sexy as shit five-o-clock shadow.

“I’m sorry Gabi, I’m not laughing at you, but that’s such a clinical approach and it’s the first time anyone has ever asked me that.” His smile lessened and he looked down at this laptop and then back up. “No. I’m not autistic. I was…abused as a child Gabi. Held behind bars and taunted, touched…by my foster parents and other adults. I’ve never done well with touching or noise since then.”

“I’m so sorry Ace, please accept my apologies for asking. I won’t bring it up again,” she said sympathetically.

“No…no worries at all, you didn’t know. Honestly I’m finding the more people I talk to about it, the more comfortable I become around people…sort of ironic. Kat…Kat has a fear of darkness and closed spaces as well. We sort of bonded over that and I’ve been trying to venture out a little each week.”

“Like dinner the other night with the headphones?” she asked smiling.

“Yea. That was Bree’s suggestion and I have to say it worked pretty well for me. I enjoyed sitting with my teammates to eat, but the noise level often gets to me.” Gabi just nodded, not wanting to pry any more than he was prepared for. “Okay, let’s take a look at what I’ve found. So far I have about forty people who have received transplants in the last year that died. In all of the cases, transplant related illnesses or rejection were cited as cause of death.”

“Okay,” she said nodding as he pushed the files toward her. “That’s a lot…way more than I thought there would be honestly.”

“Well, I started with the cities the feds told us they had their suspicions about. From there, I just ventured further out.
